Cultivating macro-competencies and student agency for academic integrity in the age of GenAI

Abstract: This chapter contributes to current debates on academic integrity and generative AI (GenAI) in higher education by reframing the discourse beyond issues of misconduct toward the cultivation of macro-competencies essential for ethical and critical engagement with AI. It proposes a conceptual framework encompassing critical thinking, critical AI literacy, ethical and social awareness, communication, creativity, and AI–human collaboration. The chapter argues that preparing students for an AI-driven world is a collective responsibility extending across institutional, professional, and societal levels, rather than a task confined to top-down policy models. Central to this framework is recognizing students’ voices and agency in the co-construction of AI policy frameworks and learning processes. By embedding these competencies within a culture of academic integrity, higher education institutions can prepare graduates to engage with AI not only with competence but also with ethical discernment, leadership, and social responsibility.
