Evaluation strategies for community-engaged learning: Centering co-creation and community partnerships

Tommy J. Van Cleave

Chapter 11 in How to Facilitate Community-Engaged Learning, 2026, pp 136-156 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores evaluation strategies for community-engaged learning (CEL), emphasizing co-creation with community-based organizations (CBOs) to ensure ethical, reciprocal, and impactful learning. It distinguishes assessment, which measures student cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes, from evaluation, which appraises program impact and partnership quality. Using the Input–Environment–Outcome (IEO) model, educators can collect baseline data, track formative indicators, and triangulate evidence to refine CEL experiences. The chapter advocates for applying Fair Trade Learning principles to avoid extractive dynamics and promote justice-oriented engagement. Practical tools and examples demonstrate how evaluations can center community goals and expertise, transforming CEL from a high-impact practice into a force for collective social change grounded in mutual accountability and learning.
