Susan J. Ferguson
Chapter 2 in Teaching Introduction to Sociology, 2026, pp 8-22 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the Sociological Literacy Framework and explains how it was developed as part of the Measuring College Learning Project and endorsed by the American Sociological Association. The 11 essential concepts and competencies of the Sociological Literacy Framework are highlighted and explained. The last part of the chapter discusses the impact the Sociological Literacy Framework has had on several additional curricular projects since 2017, including Sociology Program Reviews, the Curriculum Mapping Toolkit for Sociology, and the ACRL Framework for Sociological Information Literacy. How the Sociological Literacy Framework can help to define learning outcomes for the introductory course and for the sociology major also is illustrated.
