Abstract: This chapter examines the concept of the sociological eye within the Sociological Literacy Framework (SLF), highlighting its dual role as both a foundational concept and an intellectual skill. Originally introduced by Collins (1998) as the ability to perceive sociological dynamics in everyday life, the sociological eye was later reframed by Ferguson and Carbonaro (2016) to emphasize mastery of sociology's major theoretical frameworks and distinctive assumptions. We explore strategies for teaching the sociological eye in introductory courses, including fostering critical awareness, applying theory to real-world contexts, and addressing student resistance rooted in common-sense explanations and beliefs about individual agency. The chapter also considers challenges such as ideological discomfort and the complexity of structural explanations, offering pedagogical interventions that integrate theory with lived experience. Ultimately, developing the sociological eye equips students to critically evaluate individualistic explanations and recognize the social forces shaping human behavior.
