LGBTQIA+ Representation and Camp Aesthetics on the Eurovision Stage as a Socio-Political Space of Queer Visibility

Abstract: The Eurovision Song Contest is not merely a music competition; it is a complex socio-political arena where European identity, national representation, and gender politics are performed. Since its inception in 1956, Eurovision has combined popular music with visual performance, evolving—particularly since the 1990s—into a significant space of expression for queer communities. Within this transformation, Camp aesthetics emerges as a strategic framework. Constructed through exaggeration, artificiality, theatricality, and irony, Camp functions both as an aesthetic that challenges gender norms and as a political narrative through which queer identities are staged. This study explores how Camp aesthetics intersect with LGBTQIA+ representation on the Eurovision stage, identifies performances that align with this aesthetic, and analyzes Camp’s role in enhancing queer visibility. Employing content analysis, the study first codes a wide selection of Eurovision performances with queer representation, followed by a semiotic analysis of the ten performances most closely aligned with Camp. The findings suggest that Eurovision serves not only as a space for LGBTQIA+ visibility but also as a platform that supports the cultural representation of queer identities through the strategic use of Camp aesthetics.
