Abstract: The relationship between employment and defence has sometimes interested economists, but in a primarily empirical approach. The difficulty of the analysis lies in the fact that the results will be directly impacted by the existence or not of conscription, the existence of an armaments industry, the economies of scale expected either in the domestic market or for export, the nature of the investments, the opportunity costs (other civilian expenditures would be more likely to develop national employment), but also the periods studied, since military technologists can have positive or negative effects on civilian technologies. The article deals with issues from France, Spain, the United Kingdom and Sweden
