Abstract:
This thesis is composed of three essays that contribute to the literature on the politicaleconomy of developing countries. The first chapter looks at the determinants of dishonestattitudes and explores the role of political leaders' corrupt example in shaping citizens' civic behaviour. The second chapter analyzes the distributional effects of drug-related organized crime in Mexico in terms of its impact on dwelling's prices. The third chapter studies the electoral punishment exerted by voters that are exposed to low-quality provision of public services. In particular, it shows how citizens randomly assigned to vote in public schools with deficient infrastructure punish the politician in charge by reducing his vote share.
