Assessing the footprints of higher education systems across Indian states: a comparative study

Abstract: Higher education is important in delivering employable youth to the existing labour market. In the recent past, most Indian states have spent heavily on educational infrastructure to enable their youth to meet the changing requirements of the labour market in light of globalisation. The study proposes a model to study the potential environment of Indian states' higher education systems, using indicators like universities, colleges, enrolment, population, gross enrolment ratio, pupil-teacher ratio, and expenditure. A composite index is constructed using the Wroclaw taxonomic method, classifying states into high, moderate, low, and very low categories. The findings can help policymakers focus on capacity building of higher education according to individual state needs.
