An enhanced operational model for timely payment of subsistence allowance in a South African organisation

Abstract:
This research addressed inefficiencies preventing a South African organisation from making prompt payments of subsistence allowances within the set time. The research used the DMAIC approach to address imperative operational issues and thereafter provided an enhanced operational model to minimise inefficient activities within the subsistence allowance process. Value stream mapping was adopted to analyse the subsistence allowance process and identify waste within the system. The results of the current state value stream mapping of the subsistence allowance claim process unveiled a total of 92.4 days of non-value adding time and 635 minutes of value-adding time to process a subsistence allowance claim. Furthermore, the future value stream mapping of the new subsistence allowance claim process proposed in this study revealed that the total non-value-added and value-added time present in the process would reduce to 48.1 days and 335 minutes respectively, if the new subsistence claim payment process is deployed.
