Chapter 9 in Building Bridges: Promoting Wellbeing for Family. Handbook for Parents, 2018, vol. 1, pp 92-104 from Editura Lumen, Department of Economics

Abstract: The main purpose of this chapter is to bring the population – and especially parents – closer to the world of emotions, in order to help them understand the role emotions play on our daily basis. In addition, it is also intended to provide activities and resources in order to be able to understand and work the concepts posed in this chapter. Emotions are and will always be present throughout our lives, and consequently, it is necessary to understand them and know how to regulate them adequately for them to contribute to our welfare. Educating emotions, or in other words, the emotional education is based on the development of emotional competences that allows favouring the comprehensive development of people, and therefore, the social and personal well-being. Emotional competences can be classified in five different groups: emotional awareness, emotional regulation, emotional autonomy, social competence and competences for life and well-being (Bisquerra & Pérez- Escoda, 2007). All of them include micro-competences such as, self-esteem, resilience, empathy, among others.
