Abstract:
Social Security and Medicare have been under serious threat since the 1970s, but advocates for the extraordinarily successful programs have prevailed. While President Trump has promised not to touch the programs, the authors have serious doubts that he will keep his promise. They present a valuable history of the political battles since World War II and a guideline about what advocates for Social Security and Medicare should do. It is possible that out of this struggle, they say, elites will gain a new appreciation of the value of these programs and the value of expanding them.
