Abstract: This article tells the story of the first Vietnamese, Ngo Vinh Long, to attend Harvard as an undergraduate student in 1964. Long taught himself English by reading novels he pur-chased at an outdoor market translating them with an Eng-lish-French dictionary. After coming to the states, he became one of the few Vietnamese to speak out against the war while residing in the U.S.
