Abstract: Never before, since the last economic crisis, has mankind tried so hard to protect the environment by using alternative energy sources. No one can deny the importance of steam, electricity and oil for the creation of long term economic wealth. Nowadays, the use of renewable energy sources plays a crucial role in guiding economy towards a new wave of growth, or, according to some, towards an apparently normal wave of lack of growth, as long as the needs of mankind and ecological requirements are met. This article deals with renewable energy sources (RES) seen as a solution to the current crisis and as a means for sustainable development. This recently established industry leads to a new industrial revolution by creating work places and by contributing to the decrease of costs by no longer using sources of fossil energy. The dependency on other states and the fluctuating prices compel us not to remain stuck with the technologies, industries and energetic systems of yesterday
