Abstract: Sustainable development, a benchmark for the current strategies, is quantified through the human development index. This paper aims at an overview of the global ranking according to this indicator and observing the changes that have influenced the human development index values recorded during 2007 – 2011. Along with the first countries in the world, Romania will be analyzed as well, in an effort to determine the human development index components that influence the most the indicator by the values recorded.
