Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of Belgium in the process of European monetary cooperation. Since Belgium was one of the founding members of the European Economic Community (EEC) and a strong supporter of monetary cooperation, we believe that its role regarding monetary integration was extremely important and somewhat underestimated in the literature. This does not mean that large states did not have a significant role, or that the role of Belgium was more important than that of Germany or France. Nevertheless, by supporting economic cooperation through its diplomatic efforts and creative proposals, Belgium played an active role in the process of European monetary integration. For Belgium, the idea of an integrated Europe was represented by exchange rate stability. Even in extremely difficult situations, Belgium did everything possible to keep the European Monetary Union (EMU) on the agenda.
