Abstract: The Romanian Higher Education system is currently facing a mass students drop out that is specific for both Public and Private sectors, leading to a disappearance of Public Universities, while the State ones have a relatively constant number. The system recognizes the fact that some of the State-owned Universities, even though face the same challenge, manage to increase their numbers of subscriptions. The article analyses the performance of four of the leading universities in Romania and tries to diagnose their management issues that lead to a high difference of their evolution and performance. By using the method of grounded theory, the research uses resources as universities and ministries reports, as well as website information and national and international statistics. Results show that a better/lack of adaptation for the studies programs to the requirements of the labor market is the key for the current evolution and involution of the four subjects.
