Abstract: Abstract Mississippi is located in the East South Central region of the United States. Mississippi has a population of 2.9 million people, making it the twentieth least populous state in 2007. The state’s population increased by 74,127 people from 2000 to 2007, and is projected to increase to 3.1 million by 2025. This 0.3% projected annual growth rate is below the national average of 0.8%. From 2006 to 2007 the state’s population grew by 0.3%. Per capita personal income in Mississippi was $28,527 in 2007, up from $26,908 in 2006. For 2007, this was $10,037 below the national average and the lowest in the country. The state’s per capita income grew at a compound annual rate of 4.5% from 2000 to 2007, compared to 3.7% nationally.
