Should Places Have Simple Images?

Simon Anholt

Chapter Chapter 4 in Places, 2010, pp 38-47 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract There is a basic question about the images of places which has seldom been addressed in the literature, and which remains largely unresolved: do places benefit more from having a clear, simple image, or is it preferable for them to have a rich, complex and even contradictory image? Societies are intrinsically complex and contradictory phenomena, so why should any country attempt to alter or disguise this fact in the way it represents itself and is perceived by outsiders?
