Production Strategies of Japanese Firms: Building up a Regional Production Network

Jochen Legewie

Chapter 5 in Corporate Strategies for South East Asia after the Crisis, 2000, pp 74-99 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The immediate effect of the Asian economic crisis has been a clearly negative one for most manufacturers in Southeast Asia, and Japanese affiliates in ASEAN countries are no exception to this observation. Two questions arise immediately regarding the short-term measures of Japanese manufacturers to overcome the negative impact of the crisis, and their long-term strategic responses to strengthen their position in the region for the medium and far future. The analysis of both shortand long-term reactions are important and interesting for at least two reasons.
