Organizational Regimes of Emotional Conduct

Abstract: Abstract History shows that management ideas about the ideal organization of work deal not only with technical specialties but also with the psychological properties of employees. A dominant discursive stream reads that in the age of flexible capitalism, companies are in need of the enterprising capacities of their employees (Miller/Rose 1990; 1995). Consequently the contemporary conception of the worker is as the enterprising subject, i.e. a person who solves bureaucratic inefficiency with his/her own creativity and innovation. One of today’s widely popularized psychological approaches is called emotional intelligence and it deals explicitly with the enterprising subject’s emotion management. In the following, I will show that emotional intelligence is a contemporary organizational regime of emotional conduct.
