Toxic Leadership: A Conceptual Framework

Jean Lipman-Blumen

Chapter 22 in Handbook of Top Management Teams, 2010, pp 214-220 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Toxic leadership refers to a process in which leaders, by dint of their destructive behaviour and/or dysfunctional personal characteristics, inflict serious and enduring harm on their followers, their organisations and non-followers alike. Defining toxic leaders can prove vexing, at best, since one individual’s toxic leader is another’s heroic saviour, given that context, history and perspective weigh heavily in such judgments.
