Abstract:
Abstract It is not overdramatic to say that companies today – or at least, many companies in the Western world – are riven with contradictions.Onthe one hand, their philosophy and implementation of the corporate mission and values reflect what might be described as a humanistic vision, where the company is seen as a human institution, “the natural product of certain social needs.”1 On the other, their management systems, mostly built around management by objectives, are designed to maximize shareholder value. Everything else – customer service, talent development, even community donations – is a means to increase profit.
