Abstract: Abstract Maine, located in the New England region of the United States, had a population of 1.3 million people in 2006, making it the eleventh least populous state. The state’s population increased by 46,651 people from 2000 to 2006, and is projected to increase to 1.4 million by 2025. This 0.4% projected annual growth rate compares to the projected national average of 0.8%. Per capita personal income in Maine was $31,931 in 2006, up from $30,825 in 2005. For 2006, this was twelfth lowest in the country and $4,698 below the national average. From 2000 to 2006 per capita income in Maine grew at an average annual rate of 3.5%, equal to the national rate.
