Embracing Complexity

Jed Hallam

Chapter Chapter 3 in The Social Media Manifesto, 2013, pp 22-28 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract I have always thought that the simplest route to understanding was to break everything into smaller pieces, understand each piece and then slowly put it all back together. Breaking complex systems into manageable, simple blocks. After I failed my Maths A-Level (it is a long story), I started to become quite interested in numbers, and in my fi rst agency job I spent a lot of time looking at how to break down complex systems to create algorithms which produced simple, understandable numbers—the perfect service for clients to purchase, as the concept of social media often terrifi es businesses because it feels so big and completely unmanageable.
