Chapter 22 in Beyond the Business Plan, 2013, pp 207-213 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The book is about and for those people who are thinking of launching a new venture and a useful starting point is not to think of a new venture automatically as an early stage business, even if it is also acknowledged that it has something in common with exploration. If a venture is labelled as a business the tendency will be to introduce too much business thinking and received business wisdom at too early a stage — and, as Part I shows, such thinking is often largely based on big business understanding and is not appropriate for many new ventures. Instead, most new ventures should be considered to be a form of exploration which might, at some stage, develop into a business.
