Abstract:
Abstract Part I quotes the comment that ‘an enterprise is a goal-realisation device’1: a remark that helps to highlight the principle that an enterprise is a means not an end. This principle is about considering the ends before focussing on the means — and then not forgetting the goal in the excitement and pressure that the means involve. So, before you engage in a new venture, it is important to consider whether it will help you to achieve your goal(s) and, once it is under way and consuming a lot of energy, it is important not to be so obsessed with the challenge that you forget why you are doing it. Without knowing where the goalposts are it is hard to know where to position yourself on the pitch or in which direction to play the ball.
