Chapter Chapter 8 in Data Mining for Managers, 2014, pp 63-64 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract It is often thought that the main reason for the prominence of data mining in today’s business world is software and the specific mathematical/ statistical applications embedded in these tools. However, many of these tools have been in existence for over 25 years. The underlying reason for the historical lack of use in the business world has been expense. The costs involved in providing the appropriate computer resources to run these applications were simply exorbitant. In today’s technical environment, the limitation is not necessarily on the processing side but rather on the ability of human beings to process this data into meaningful information. In fact, the use of technology such as Hadoop and MapReduce from organizations such as Apache has even accelerated this data processing capability to a new level. The world of big data has resulted in the type of technology that allows us to deal with the three Vs of Big Data: large amounts of data (volume) in different formats (variety) in many cases are being streamed in real time (velocity).
