Introduction The Diversity of Employee Relationships

A chapter in Teamwork in the Automobile Industry, 1999, pp 1-34 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The automobile industry, in the United States and then in Europe, was one of the first sectors affected by the current phase of crisis in capital accumulation which began at the end of the 1970s. In successive waves, in North America (1979–82) and in European countries (France: 1981–85, Germany: 1988–91, Italy: 1989–91) markets collapsed and then returned to their usual levels. At the same time, new Japanese competitors entered first North American and then European markets with products of superior quality at lower costs. These lower costs were partly the result of the favourable exchange rate of the yen. They were also the result of Japanese superiority in manufacturing methods, and the fact that their cars were easier to assemble, when the Japanese assemblers established themselves in North America and Europe to overcome economic or customs barriers in the target countries.
