Abstract: Abstract Since the end of 1980s there have been very distinctive changes at Japanese automotive firms characterised by flatter organisational hierarchies and increased flexibility (functional and temporal). With regard to the remuneration system, it has become much more meritocratic in contrast to the traditional seniority-based wage system, which is now being reconsidered by many firms. In terms of the so-called lifetime employment system, a variety of different contracts have been introduced, and we are increasingly finding different types of temporal employee. In addition, many workers are now being encouraged or forced to change their jobs by the companies. Finally, at the plant level, the situation is being radically reformed with significant changes to organisational culture and practice. In this paper our concern is to focus specifically on these ongoing reforms at shopfloor level.
