A chapter in The Dictionary of Modern Economics, 1983, pp 26-50 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Back-haul Rates. Freight or transport charges for some route, which are lower for movement in one direction than in the other. Most forms of transport require containers or vehicles which must be returned to the point of origin after each trip. Since it is unlikely that there will be exactly equal demand for transport in both directions, excess capacity will exist on the ‘back’ journey. It will be in the transport operator’s interest to attempt to fill this excess capacity by charging lower rates for the ‘back’ journey.
