DiVanna Chapter Chapter 16 in Redefining Financial Services, 2002, pp 129-141 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract The fragmented Eastern European marketplace presents an interesting environment for value creation that allows previously competing financial services providers to establish a co-branded, co-operative market presence for their products and services in a level playing field. Financial services firms have an opportunity to provide branded financial products under an umbrella of a pseudo-franchise of services theoretically labelled the eFinance Interchange Model. It is strikingly similar to the complex partnerships found in the Italian super-companies of the late medieval times, in which competitive organizations shared a common resource (for example a ship) to engage in long-range trade activities. The mechanism of a franchised service galvanizes the regional marketplace by providing a suite of mixed products (primarily retail banking services and commercial banking services in small and medium enterprises) that span competing firms in Eastern Europe. The essential ingredients of the model are: eMarketplace aggregation, brand management and a set of consolidated settlement services.
