Taking the M&A Route?

Michael Backman and Charlotte Butler

Chapter Strategy 7 in BIG in Asia, 2003, pp 76-89 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The appearance of headlines such as these in the region’s newspapers in the wake of the 1997–98 economic crisis accounts for the rise in M&A activity in Asia over the past five years. Foreign companies (not just Western but those from other Asian countries too) had been shut out of whole categories of industries during the boom years. Now they found the door not just unlocked but, in some cases, wide open. However, the headlines also contained a warning, and, in some countries, the warning turned into a threat. As the reference to ‘vultures’ indicates, foreign investment was not universally welcome, and many of the ‘bargains’ were not what they seemed.
