Abstract:
Abstract The economies of Japan and South Korea are each dominated by distinct forms of business organisation — in Japan the keiretsu and in South Korea the chaebol. One of the unique features of these business models is that they were born out of a centrally directed industrialisation policy, so that for decades, the strong government backing and protection they received made them practically invincible in their home markets. However, buffeted by economic downturn and the pressures of globalisation, times are changing, opening up opportunities for outsiders to enter and grow even in these most difficult of Asian markets.
