Learning in Action: Accelerating the Development of High-Potential Executives in the Canadian Public Service
Charles Brassard
Chapter 9 in Action Learning Worldwide, 2002, pp 133-151 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Action learning is a powerful concept and application for meeting the development needs of individuals and supporting the priorities of organizations. It provides the foundation for an innovative programme established within the federal public service of Canada designed to help address the leadership gap created by rapidly retiring senior executives. In the spirit of action learning, this chapter describes the various components of the Accelerated Executive Development Programme in light of the lessons learned from its implementation over the past two to three years. It will hopefully serve as a useful point of reference for practitioners with an interest in action learning, both from an overall programme design perspective, and from its specific applications ‘on the ground’. The article concludes by highlighting key success factors associated with action learning programmes based on this experience and related future developments.
