Abstract: Abstract Whereas the work ethic of earlier times was supposed to help the working individual find his personal value in the quality of his work, the modern-day work ethic concentrates simply on the term ‘teamwork’. This includes, for example, sensitive behaviour towards others as well as other soft skills such as being a good listener, being able to cooperate in the broadest sense of the word and a collective adaptability on the team’s part to changing circumstances. Surely no one would want to question this basic social consensus, and yet American sociologist Richard Sennett1 believes that this generally prevailing understanding of teamwork embodies a sphere of ‘demeaning superficiality’ that casts its shadow over the entire working world. Sennett argues that, on entering this world, the individual leaves the realm of the tragedy in her struggle for self-realization to become part of a farce — for life.
