Abstract:
“Firm, Knowledge and Innovation” brings together the subset of contributions focussing explicitly on problems of organisational behaviour and the theory of the firm. The papers demonstrate how placing knowledge at the centre of organisational analysis leads to new questions and insights concerning the sources of competitive performance. Most obviously it shifts the focus from static questions of designing optimal governance structures in relation to given technologies to dynamic questions of how firms learn and develop new technologies and products, which are seen as key to longer term survival. The knowledge-based perspective also raises new questions concerning the mechanisms that contribute to the firm’s shorter-term competitive advantage in the context of established technologies.
