Chapter Chapter 6 in Demographic Transition, Labour Markets and Regional Resilience, 2017, pp 131-153 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The Japanese population is both decreasing rapidly and ageing due to low birth rates and longer life expectancies. Within marginalised areas, such as North Kyoto, the situation is becoming highly problematic because the main industry has been agriculture. Stagnation of economic activities, along with depopulation and ageing, are making traditional community functions fragile. Universities are providing a supporting role for regional and local authorities with research studies and practical policy recommendations for local communities and the development of socio-economic alliances and local collaboration. This chapter explores the Community and University Alliance for the regeneration of Northern Kyoto Area (CUANKA) and the potential of the Kyoto Model.
