Chapter 2 in Planning Support Systems in Practice, 2003, pp 25-44 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Central to the focus of this chapter is the recognition that public participation in planning is increasing at a tremendous pace. One of the consequences of this trend is the necessity to develop new and user-friendly planning support systems (PSS) which can be accessed by all those interested in the development of their regions or localities. The imperative is for interactive and/or participatory PSS, dedicated to the broad diversity of actors involved. In this context we seek to illustrate in this chapter some examples of these PSS designed to disseminate information as widely as possible and to facilitate participation in contemporary planning practice. We conclude that, although it is still too early to evaluate the benefits of these new geotechnological systems, the first signs are promising.
