Space and Empirical Approaches to Regional Growth

Roberta Capello and Ugo Fratesi

Chapter 3 in Modelling Regional Scenarios for the Enlarged Europe, 2008, pp 49-67 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Over the past twenty years there has been a resurgence of interest in space among all forms of economic analysis, including empirical inquiry. The previous chapters have highlighted the theoretical development of space in local growth theories, preparing the ground for the conceptual framework used in the operational MASST model. This chapter describes how the treatment of space has developed in empirical analyses of regional growth, the specific aim being to link empirical techniques for the measurement of local growth determinants with the technical choices made in designing the MASST model.
