Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, the completion of the internal European market has exerted far reaching impacts on ways of articulating the region. In addition, the internationalization of the national economies has caused a greater specialization of each regional economy in its comparative advantage. This has led to an increased emphasis on the intrinsic regional profile and potentials. In practice, this may mean a strong appeal to the self-organizing capacity and perhaps even also the self-financing capacity of the region. There has always been rivalry between regions in Europe, but it has now become more intense than ever.
