Abstract: Abstract So far in this book the focus has been on the evolution of what might be regarded as the traditional approaches to regional economic analysis and to regional and local economic development planning that occurred up to the 1980s and into the early 1990s. Previous chapters have overviewed the development of a number of standard quantitative tools of analyses for measuring and evaluating change overtime in the performance of a region. Attention now turns to consider the emergence of a new set of approaches to regional economic development which focus on how regions might position (or reposition) themselves to be competitive in the current era of globalization with its attendant attributes of rapid change and uncertainty. This has been leading researchers to consider the way regions might set paths and develop strategies for the future.
