Chapter 1 in Space Economy SEWA - Start, Evolve, or Walk Away, 2025, pp 1-3 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter introduces the space economy, an interconnected system of upstream infrastructure (launch vehicles, satellites, stations, lunar bases) and downstream applications (telecommunications, navigation and geolocation, environmental monitoring, weather prediction, telemedicine). Against a backdrop of record investment and a shift from government-led programs to commercial pioneers like Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, we present the SEWA framework: Start, Evolve, or Walk Away. Designed for executives, entrepreneurs, and public institutions, SEWA integrates market analysis, organisational strategy, financial viability, and technological readiness to help leaders decide whether to launch new ventures, pivot existing ones, or exit unsustainable efforts. The chapter outlines SEWA’s components, offers practical decision criteria, and previews real-world case studies spanning the United States, Europe, and Asia. It also introduces dimensions, a solar-system-inspired model that visualises strategic positioning and interdependencies. With Focus sections at the end of each chapter and data-driven analysis, readers gain a flexible, actionable toolkit to capture opportunities in the fastest-growing global industry and to navigate the evolving landscape of satellite services, Earth observation, and space-enabled innovation.
