Chapter Chapter 2 in Quantitative Models for Value-Based Supply Chain Management, 2013, pp 7-49 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides the terminological basis for the research of the thesis at hand and a review of related literature. The first section, which deals with value-based management (VBM), outlines what is comprehended by the term “value”, how it can be measured and what factors influence company value. This section ends with a discussion of empirical aspects of VBM. The second section comprises a comprehensive introduction of supply chain management (SCM). After terminological aspects and characteristics of SCM are discussed, special focus is put on types of flows through supply chains (SC). Furthermore constituents and components, relationships and benefits of SCM are explained and an SCM framework is outlined to position the research of this thesis. Under consideration of the empirical and case-related parts of this dissertation (Chaps. 6, 8 and 9), SC dynamics and uncertainties as well as SCM in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry are thoroughly discussed. The last section of this chapter is related to value-based SCM. Finanical impacts of SCM, driven by sales, cost and capital, are outlined. Beyond this, 20 selected manuscripts are reviewed to illustrate the broadness of this field of research, its current status and recent developments.
