Abstract: This paper introduces a newsvendor approach for capacity planning of information and communication technologies (ICT), in particular the hardware. Contrary to the reference models in computer sciences, which are primarily concerned with technical aspects and a high system utilization, this approach aims to adapt the ICT capacity cost-effectively to the uncertain technology and demand development. The application of the planning procedure is illustrated by implementing an interactive voice response unit at a call center. Copyright Springer-Verlag 2008
