Chapter 4 in Uses and Limitations of the AHP Method, 2021, pp 31-39 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the fundamental aspects of the AHP method related with its procedure, especially its preferences and their quantification, its relationship with reality and its appreciation of people’s problems originated by projects, that is, the chapter questions its logic, judgement and rationality. It is explained here the reasons that justify the criticisms that this method has received since its beginnings, decades ago, and that have not subsided. The many different negative evaluations are mostly based in its lack of a mathematical base, as well as the use of the very debatable pair-wise comparison method, and which is worse, to its ad hoc table to quantify preferences. The AHP method originates many questions from practitioners; some of them are detailed and analysed in a small but realistic sample.
