Abstract:
Abstract This chapter presents a structured framework for analyzing the transformation of GE Appliances (GEA) under its new ownership by the Haier Group. The framework is widely applicable, as it is drawn from the author’s previous research on the introduction and dissemination of management innovations, and it has been shown to be useful for studying the adoption of innovations that range from TQM and Lean to the Google management model. Essentially, the framework states that for a corporate transformation to be successful, five steps must occur. First, the new approach or methodology must be perceived as desirable. It must also be judged as feasible for the company. Then comes a first trial, typically through a pilot application and learning experience, followed by enterprise-wide implementation. Last, but not least, conscious efforts must be directed toward sustaining change throughout the organization.
