Abstract:
Abstract Chinese companies including Alibaba, Baidu, Haier, Huawei, Tencent, and Xiaomi have been studied by the author. Key features of these companies, and the management principles that they use, are similar to those found at leading companies in Silicon Valley. The companies that were studied have benefited from long-term leadership by visionary and entrepreneurial founding CEOs. They promote cultures that emphasize innovation, speed, and adaptability, and they recruit employees who have corresponding qualities. The Chinese companies have displayed considerable ability to explore and grow new lines of business while optimizing current businesses. They are organized in relatively flat and flexible management structures; use a variety of non-bureaucratic methods to coordinate employees and resources; and are vigorous adopters of open-innovation and ecosystem approaches.
