A chapter in The Global Impact of Social Innovation, 2022, pp 167-177 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract It all started in May 2015 in Kathmandu one day after the second earthquake. The reason for my trip was solely to fulfill my sister’s last wish. Heidi wanted me to send her ashes to nirvana in the sacred Bagmati River. As you can imagine it was devastating to see all the damage and pain. I started to engage straight away by supporting an orphanage that found shelter in a temporary camp. The engagement evolved. The I turned into We which turned into a nonprofit organization – an interesting experience – following a multi-program approach (street children protection, awareness, parental empowerment, education, environment, and health. In addition, we also want to support the local economy and our fundraising efforts. To do so we included a social business component. We produce “wishing bracelets” from survivors of human trafficking and people without hearing and sell them in our web shop. At the same time, we support a local printing house and paper manufacturer. All proceeds are used to help create a better life for children in Nepal. Empowerment and strengthening local communities are important for us as well. We are elaborating additional ways to collaborate with our partner NGO that supports street children to see how we can expand our offering with products trainees or young professionals can produce.
