Chapter 5 in Disinformation Attacks On Businesses, 2026, pp 29-45 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explains why people are susceptible to disinformation and rumors, which often contain a kernel of truth and spread virally. Cognitive biases and heuristics shape what we believe and make us vulnerable to manipulative narratives. Information vacuums foster speculation, which disinformation agents exploit to stir emotions such as fear or anger. Social media and algorithms amplify dissemination through echo chambers and targeted strategies such as flooding. The persistence of disinformation in memory makes correction difficult, as mental models can only be replaced by strong alternatives.
