Chapter Chapter 3 in Lean Management for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, 2023, pp 27-37 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract A country's innovative ability, business enterprise, employment, and general well-being thrive in the presence of a vibrant SME sector. Small and Medium Enterprises are the axons of a country's business neural network. SMEs are ever present, and collectively provide the cushion for demand shocks. However, as an individual enteprise, they are very vulnerable, usually short-term focused, and can break under stress. While the environment is unlikely to get any less competitive, Lean is the most apt approach to prepare SMEs to develop flexibility to meet the stress. Good news is some of the necessary conditions such as flatter organization, closer shop-floors, usage of general purpose machines, constrained access to capital etc., for Lean to flourish are automatically present in most SMEs. For an SME owner, it would be handy to understand various obstacles to Lean adaption and the work-arounds, so that she can undertake a smooth Lean journey.
